What affects our identity?

Identity formation and evolution are impacted by a variety of internal and external factors like society, family, loved ones, ethnicity, race, culture, location, opportunities, media, interests, appearance, self-expression and life experiences.

Can you have more than one identity?

We all have multiple identities — race, gender, age, sexual orientation, occupation — the list goes on and on. Moreover, some past work with adults has shown that people do in fact claim distinct and overlapping identities at different times (Crisp, Hewstone & Rubin, 2001; Goclowska & Crisp, 2014).

How do I lose my identity?

Loss of identity may follow all sorts of change; changes in the workplace, loss of a job or profession, loss of a role that once defined us, as a child, as a parent, as a spouse.

How does memory shape our identity?

According to Lockes “memory theory”, a persons identity only reaches as far as their memory extends into the past. In other words, who one is critically depends upon what one remembers. Thus, as a persons memory begins to disappear, so does his identity.

For brands, having multiple identities can be advantageous for marketing purposes. Casserly argues that “because people [marketers and individuals] have given them incredible control over personas and personalities online, you can never be 100% certain of a persons identity” (Casserly, 2011).

How is an identity formed?

Identity is formed through a process of exploring options or choices and committing to an option based upon the outcome of their exploration. Failure to establish a well-developed sense of identity can result in identity confusion.
