Question: What was in Pandoras Box?

In mythology Pandora opened a jar left in her care containing sickness, death and many other unspecified evils which were then released into the world. From this story has grown the idiom to open a Pandoras box, meaning to do or start something that will cause many unforeseen problems.

What was inside Pandoras box?

Horrible things flew out of the box including greed, envy, hatred, pain, disease, hunger, poverty, war, and death. All of lifes miseries had been let out into the world. Pandora slammed the lid of the box back down. The last thing remaining inside of the box was hope.

Why was hope the last thing in Pandoras Box?

According to Hesiod, Zeus willed that Hope should stay inside because he wanted mortals to suffer in order to understand that they should not disobey their gods. To that end, he gives man hope. In truth, it is the most evil of evils because it prolongs mans torment.”

Why was hope in Pandoras jar?

Perhaps hope was originally another evil but after being opened hope was transformed into good hope. Its as if hope, separated from evil, takes on a new character. So its preservation in the jar preserves this good hope which can then (somehow) be accessed when needed.

Who made Pandoras box?

Zeus sent her to Epimetheus, who forgot the warning of his brother Prometheus and made Pandora his wife. She afterward opened the jar, from which the evils flew out over the earth.
