Originally a skating race for women, roller derby evolved in the 1930s into an aggressive team racing spectacle, complete with hair-pulling and tripping. Since the 2000s, the sport has been regulated and players wear a full set of safety gear.

Do you have to be strong to play roller derby?

There is no special secret to being small and playing roller derby, its just hard work and no fear. If you really want to succeed, then the hard work is worth it. In the beginning, I believed myself quite fit but not strong. I got knocked to the ground a lot.

Is roller derby still around?

Today, several hundred leagues exist all over the world. While the original version of the sport eventually became more of a spectacle with fights and other staged theatrics, todays roller derby is a legitimate sport played by true athletes.

What exactly is roller derby?

Roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played by two teams of fifteen members. The jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to hinder the opposing jammer while assisting their own jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously.
